Background of the Study

Pediatric Early Warning Systems (PEWS) are tools used to identify deteriorating pediatric patients early by tracking vital signs and clinical indicators, allowing healthcare providers to intervene before the patient’s condition worsens (Ogunyemi et al., 2023). The implementation of PEWS has been associated with a reduction in hospital mortality and an improvement in patient outcomes by enabling timely medical interventions. In Sokoto State, where healthcare infrastructure is often limited, early identification of critically ill children is crucial to improving survival rates.

Despite the growing adoption of PEWS in many healthcare settings, there are still challenges in their implementation, particularly in resource-constrained environments like Sokoto State. This study will examine the effectiveness of PEWS in reducing pediatric hospital mortality in Sokoto State, exploring how these systems are utilized, the challenges faced in their use, and their impact on patient outcomes.

Statement of the Problem

In Sokoto State, pediatric hospital mortality rates remain high due to delayed identification and intervention in critically ill children. The introduction of Pediatric Early Warning Systems aims to reduce these mortality rates by detecting early signs of deterioration. However, the effectiveness of PEWS in Sokoto State remains uncertain, with potential barriers such as insufficient training, limited resources, and a lack of standardized protocols. This study will assess the effectiveness of PEWS in reducing pediatric hospital mortality and explore factors that influence its successful implementation.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To evaluate the effectiveness of Pediatric Early Warning Systems in reducing hospital mortality among pediatric patients in Sokoto State.
  2. To identify barriers to the effective implementation of PEWS in Sokoto State.
  3. To recommend strategies for improving the use of PEWS in Sokoto State’s pediatric healthcare settings.

Research Questions

  1. How effective is the Pediatric Early Warning System in reducing pediatric hospital mortality in Sokoto State?
  2. What factors influence the successful implementation of PEWS in Sokoto State?
  3. What strategies can be implemented to enhance the effectiveness of PEWS in Sokoto State?

Research Hypotheses

  1. The implementation of PEWS significantly reduces pediatric hospital mortality in Sokoto State.
  2. Challenges such as lack of training and inadequate resources hinder the effectiveness of PEWS in Sokoto State.
  3. Improved staff training and resource allocation will enhance the effectiveness of PEWS in Sokoto State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on pediatric hospitals and healthcare settings in Sokoto State that use PEWS. Data will be collected through medical records analysis, interviews with healthcare providers, and direct observations. Limitations include incomplete medical records and potential biases in healthcare providers' reporting of PEWS use.

Definitions of Terms

  • Pediatric Early Warning System (PEWS): A clinical tool used to monitor the vital signs of pediatric patients and detect early signs of deterioration to prevent adverse outcomes.
  • Hospital Mortality: The rate of death occurring among hospitalized patients.
  • Clinical Indicators: Measurable signs, such as heart rate, blood pressure, and oxygen levels, that provide information about a patient’s health status.
